Cinderella in cleats: Fresno State wins College World Series

Omaha, NE (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Steve Detwiler went 4-for-4, including a pair of
homers, and drove in all the runs for Fresno State, which won its first
College World Series championship with a 6-1 victory over Georgia.
Georgia used an eighth-inning rally to take Monday's opening game, 7-6, though
Fresno State powered to a 19-10 win on Tuesday. Detwiler was the driving force
Wednesday in helping Fresno State take the best-of-three series, setting
records for most home runs, most extra-base hits, most RBI and most total
bases in a championship game.
He provided enough offense for Fresno State starter Justin Wilson, who threw
eight brilliant innings, giving up only one run on five hits, while striking
out nine. Tommy Mendonca, who hit four homers and drove in 11 over the course
of the tournament, and had stellar defense at third base, was named Most
Outstanding Player.
The school became the lowest seeded team to win an NCAA championship in any
sport. It was a fourth seed at the Long Beach Regional, and began its unlikely
run there, knocking off 11th-seeded Long Beach State and sixth-ranked San
Diego. In the Super Regional, Fresno State won two of three against third-
ranked Arizona State to reach the College World Series.
Fresno State went on to beat fifth-ranked Rice, eliminate second-ranked North
Carolina and staved off elimination three times in the same tournament, ending
with a 47-31 record.
Gordon Beckham went 2-for-4 with a solo homer to provide Georgia's only run,
and tied LSU's Matt Clark for the national lead in homers with 28. Starter
Nathan Moreau was solid in five innings, holding the Fresno State offense to
three runs -- two earned -- on three hits, but took the loss.
"First, I have to tip my hat to Fresno State," Georgia head coach David Perno
said. "They are a true champion. They did it the hard way with five games in
five days...To our guys, just a group of guys who went 23-33 (last year) and
set their sights that they were going to be here, and not only did we get
here, but we did a fair share of winning here."
Georgia, which finished with a 45-25-1 record, lost its first game of the
Athens Regional to Lipscomb, but won four straight from there to advance to
the Super Regionals. After winning two of three against N.C. State, Georgia
advanced to the College World Series, where it was undefeated in three games
until meeting Fresno State. Georgia last won the CWS in 1990.
"We just came up one short. It was unfortunate tonight. We had some
opportunities and we hit some balls hard at those times but nothing fell for
us. We just couldn't keep them in the yard," Perno said.
In the top of the second, Steve Susdorf got on board with an infield single.
After an Alan Ahmady fly out, Detwiler smacked a ball to right field that just
got over the fence in right field for a 2-0 Fresno State lead.
Georgia got a rally going in the home second as Danny Muno made a pair of
errors. The shortstop dropped the ball while lunging forward, allowing leadoff
hitter Bryce Massanari to reach base. Later, Muno made too high a throw for a
force out at second, leaving the bases loaded with two outs. But Gavin
Hedstrom made a nice catch on a long drive from Ryan Peisel to end the threat.
Detwiler sent a deep drive to center in the fourth to plate another run, and
put Fresno State on top 3-0, but his biggest -- at least longest -- hit of the
night came in the sixth.
With two outs, Susdorf doubled and Ahmady walked against Dean Weaver, who
relieved Moreau at the beginning of the frame. Detwiler then crushed a high
fastball to left, into the last several rows of the stands, boosting Fresno
State's lead to 6-1.
Beckham led off the bottom of the eighth, but Wilson got out of the inning
without further damage. Clayton Allison got into trouble in the bottom of the
ninth -- two on and none out -- but closer Brandon Burke got David Thoms to
ground into a double play. Matt Olson then hit a fly to right field, which
Detwiler caught to end the game.

Odds to Win the 2007 Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament
As of February 9, 2007, MySportsbook.com has released its coveted 2007 Mens NCAA Basketball Tournament betting odds. “March Madness betting ” only a month away, the top ranked Florida Gators are favorite at 7-2 to win it all. The defending champs have not disappointed at all this season and currently have a 22-2 record and are undefeated (9-0) in SEC play. The Gators’ thrive off of their extremely balanced, experienced and versatile attack. All five starters started in last seasons National Championship game. What is most impressive with this group is their balance; the five starters all average between 10.7 and 13.6 PPG. The Gators have been on an absolute roll having won 15 straight by an average of 16.4 PPG.
Right behind the Gators are the 5th ranked UNC Tar Heels at 9-2. The Heels (21-3, 7-2) are absolutely loaded with top notch talent and are as deep as any team in the country. A concern for the Tar Heels might be inexperience. Of their top four scorers/ minute earners, three are freshmen and the other is a sophomore. The rest of the regular season, the Tar Heels play only one team that is currently ranked (Duke). Their remaining opponents do combine for an impressive 107-58 record though.
Other teams that the MySportsbook.com members seem to believe will win it all include the west coasts’ top team #2 UCLA (6-1), #3 OSU behind man-child Greg Oden (8-1), and #4 Wisconsin (10-1) behind their defense which has given up 70+ points only three times all season.
Below is a list of some of the favorites to win the 2007 Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship lines. For the full list of teams and March Madness odds be sure to log onto MySportsbook.com. Colts give the ‘D’ its due
The Indianapolis Colts know that winning the Super Bowl last season put a huge target on their backs, and they expect opponents to go all-out to knock them from the top of the mountain.
They’ll get their first test from the New Orleans Saints this Thursday night. The defending champs had nothing but good things to say about the New Orleans defense this past week, praising their opponents’ pass rush and run-stopping abilities.
"They play very aggressively," head coach Tony Dungy told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "They play a lot of man-to-man coverage, and they come after you. They have good pass rushers, and they're going to try to pressure us, I'm sure."
Both center Jeff Saturday and quarterback Peyton Manning gave New Orleans’ front four props, admitting keeping guys like Will Smith and Charles Grant contained would be a tall task for the offensive line.
New Orleans ranked second in total defense during the preseason at a sportsbook, allowing just under 233 yards per game. Last season, the defense finished 11th in the league after giving up 307.3 yards and 20.1 points per contest.
Not so sound on the ground
If Indianapolis' efficient offense has a weakness it has to be its running attack. The Colts one-two-punch of Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai is no longer, leaving the bulk of the carries to Addai, the second-year back out of LSU.
Former Saskatchewan Roughrider Kenton Keith was named Addai’s backup this week after beating out DeDe Dorsey for the second-string position. Indy has only three backs on the roster right now, including fullback Luke Lawton, and coach Dungy is aware of the thinness of his ground game. Sports Betting lines on the game can be found at BettingExpress.com
“We’ll continue to look. Luke Lawton’s done a good job for us too. So probably getting a third true tailback is something that we’d like to do,” Dungy told the Indiana Tribune-Star.
Last season, Addai rushed for over 1,000 yards in his rookie campaign and scored seven touchdowns on the ground.
Brees says bring it on
Opening the season on the road against the defending Super Bowl champions is not the way most teams would like to kick off their year – unless you’re the New Orleans Saints or their quarterback Drew Brees. This internet Sportsbooks had the Saints as the favorites.
Brees told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that he is excited to get the regular season started and the Colts are a great challenge for him and his teammates. The 28-year-old QB, entering his second season with the Saints, is expecting a wild environment in the RCA Dome this Thursday when the franchise celebrates its 2007-2007 championship.
Brees said he sees the opening game scheduling as an honor and a testament to how well New Orleans did last season. The Saints missed facing the Colts in the Super Bowl by one game, losing to the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship game.
"I mean, people think we can hang with these guys," Brees told reporters. "Even if they didn't, it wouldn't matter what they thought because as a team we're very confident. We know what we can do. We're not satisfied where we finished the season last year. And we've been looking forward to this opportunity for a long time."
SportsBooks ready for a shootout
Oddsmakers are preparing for some fireworks this Thursday when the NFL season kicks off. online Sportsbooks have Thursday’s total set at a whopping 52 points, accounting for two of the league’s most explosive offenses.
“This is like must-see TV,” Saints cornerback and former Colt Jason David told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “It’s two exciting offenses with great players. You’ve got a lot of star power on offense. At any given time a big play can happen. If I was a fan, I wouldn’t miss a snap.”
New Orleans, who ranked No.1 in total offense last season, can go blow-for-blow with the Colts’ attack. Head coach Sean Payton’s offensive schemes will get even better production out of Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and receiver Marques Colston now that they’ve each had a season of playing together under their belts.
The Saints and Colts were the top two passing teams in the NFL last year, but while Indianapolis managed to put up almost 27 points per game, New Orleans struggled to capitalize on their efforts. The Saints ranked fifth in points per game.
“Yards are great,” running back Deuce McAllister told reporters, “but to be able to score more touchdowns would be important for us.”
